PLASTIC bags strewn in the bushes and half-opened loafs of bread scattered on the pathways.

This is the scene that greets Janet Osborne as she makes her daily walk from her home in Copdock and through the underpass near Tesco's and she is sick of their rubbish ruining the landscape.

"Tesco's should be doing something to help this situation as it is mostly rubbish from their store," said the pensioner from Pearsons Way, Copdock.

"It is awful and looks very unsightly when you see all their bags hanging from trees and I have even seen sliced meat on the floor.

"This will encourage rats and make problems in the area even worse.

"I have lived in the area for 18 years and it has definitely got worse with broken glass bottles also causing a danger for children, dogs and motorists.

"I think they should charge people a small fee for bags like other places do, this will surely make people think twice before throwing their rubbish away.

"Tesco's slogan is, 'every little helps' but they need to apply this to outside the store as well.

"I think they have made a small effort to clear some of the mess but it is not enough," she said angrily.

Tesco spokesman Greg Sage said: "We do not own the underpass and it is not part of our site but we know that it is untidy.

"We will make the council aware of the mess which is unsightly and that our customers have been complaining.

"We take our community role seriously and don't want to be serving customers in an untidy area.

"In the meantime we will be sending some of our litter pickers along."
