EVIL Moors Murderer Myra Hindley has died in a Suffolk hospital.

A Prison Service spokesman confirmed hated Hindley had died following respiratory failure.

He said Hindley's next-of-kin had been informed. The death will now be investigated by a coroner, as is routine for any prisoner who dies while in custody.

The health of Britain's most notorious female prisoner had declined rapidly after tests for a suspected heart condition at West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds, yesterday.

Hindley, who was jailed for life for a sickening string of child murders with ex-lover Ian Brady in 1966, became a Roman Catholic in prison.

The 60-year-old, who suffered from angina and brittle bone disease, was rushed to the hospital last month after collapsing in her cell at nearby Highpoint Prison.

Hospital staff dealing with condition checks yesterday confirmed chain-smoker Hindley was being treated at the hospital. It is understood she had a guard of three police officers by her bed.

The child killer had undergone a series of health scares over the past two years, fuelling a campaign by supporters backing her bid to be freed.

Hindley was facing a possible pre-Christmas release from Highpoint, where she had been held since the mid-1990s.

Hindley and Brady, 64, were given life imprisonment for the Moors Murders in 1966.

She was jailed for murdering Edward Edwards, 17, and Lesley Anne Downey, ten, and being an accessory to the murder of 12-year-old John Kilbride.

The pair confessed in 1987 to the murders of Pauline Reade, 16, and Keith Bennett, 12.
