AN EX-IPSWICH bouncer told police how he "restrained" a Chinese nightclubber who was involved in a fight with two men in Kartouche nightclub, a murder trial has heard.

AN EX-IPSWICH bouncer told police how he "restrained" a Chinese nightclubber who was involved in a fight with two men in Kartouche nightclub, a murder trial has heard.

Toby Woods, who is accused of violent disorder on August 14, last year, told police at interview that he had wanted a "nice quiet goodbye drink with my friends," on the evening a fatal attack on 24-year-old Phil Hoi Phat Lui.

Reading from a statement Woods made to police last September, junior crown counsel Adam Budworth said the 27-year-old former doorman had gone to Kartouche for a farewell drink before moving to south Wales.

But the night turned sour when he witnessed an incident in the upstairs of the club.

"Out of the corner of my eye I saw Person Two reach over and clump the Chinese guy on the left hand side of the face," read Mr Budworth.

Woods told police he went over to both men and told "Person Two" to sit down before returning to the bar. "Person Two" appeared to have "calmed down a bit", the statement read.

Shortly later, he spotted Person One and Person Two "fighting who I thought was the Chinese guy", Woods told police.

"I went over to the Chinese guy and restrained him," Mr Budworth read. "I thought the best way to

diffuse it was to take him out of the equation."

Woods told police he had held the Chinese man in the belief that Persons One and Two would not continue to hit him.

Woods said he had not held the Chinese man around the neck, and added: "I was not holding the bloke around the neck. I was not strangling him in any way."

The court heard Woods had refused to name Person One or Two or to comment on whether either of them was Lewis Carroll or Steven Lowe for reasons of "personal safety".

Woods, of Cosmeston Street, Cardiff, denies violent disorder.

Lewis Carroll, 32, of Crocus Close, Ipswich, and Steven Lowe, 24, of Spring Road, Ipswich, deny murdering Mr Lui who grew up in Felixstowe.

The trial continues at Norwich Crown Court today.
