A former pillar of the community still in denial after being convicted of voyeurism and child pornography has been told he has destroyed his reputation.

Simon Duke, who used to live in the Sudbury area, had been a school governor, parish councillor and involved with his local church.

The 47-year-old was given a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, when he appeared for sentencing at Ipswich Crown Court.

The court heard Duke steadfastly denies any wrongdoing despite being found guilty by a jury of filming a young girl changing in a toilet and four unconnected charges of making indecent images. The filming did not take place at the school where Duke was a governor.

Judge Martyn Levett told him: “I believe you are kidding yourself that you are still innocent.

“The purpose of such filming, as the jury found conclusively, was for your sexual gratification.”

The iPhone on which Duke filmed the three minute clip of the girl was never found, leading police to the conclusion that he had disposed of it.

Judge Levett said: “From that moment on you set about spinning a web of lies.”

On four occasions Duke - who had previously been a well-thought of member of the community - changed his story about what happened to the phone.

The judge continued: “I think the lie you told as it tripped off you tongue was exposed by cell site analysis and phone data records that reveal your story was just another attempt to wriggle from your responsibility.

“You have destroyed entirely your own character and I’m afraid that is entirely as a result of your own behaviour.

“You have let everyone down. You continue to deny these offences.

“You show no remorse whatsoever and you can not understand the harm that has been caused by your actions.”

Among the 57 indecent images of children found on two different devices were 10 graded at Category A – the most serious grading of child pornography.

Duke, now of Fulbourn, Cambridgeshire, must also do 300 hours’ unpaid work during his suspended sentence and was given a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order. He must also sign the sex offenders’ register 10 years.
