As well as ensuring that Cinders made it safely to the ball, the Fairy Godmother had another special duty to perform in Bury St Edmunds this week.
Fresh from the stage of the Theatre Royal, cast members from Cinderella were given the task of choosing the winning entry in this year’s Christmas Tree Festival at St Edmundsbury Cathedral.
The entry that shone out among the array of festive firs lighting up the cathedral cloisters was the West Suffolk Blind Association’s tree, with decorations delicately made out of Braille paper.
Specialised glasses were also available nearby for people to experience the colour of Christmas through the “eyes” of the visually impaired.
Meanwhile in Sudbury, people are being offered a chance to ‘rent a Christmas tree’ if they don’t want to buy one this festive season.
Sudbury conservation group, Woodland BATS, is running the scheme for the third year in a row to reduce waste and promote conservation. The trees are between four and five feet tall, are organically grown, and come potted complete with roots and care instructions. Details for the return of the tree are also provided so it can be grown on for future years.
Trees, which cost £7.50 each plus a £7.50 refundable deposit will be available from outside Sudbury Town Hall on Market Hill this morning from 9am on a first-come-first-served basis.
