HEAVY horses, honey and face-painting were just a few of the attractions at Otley College's open weekend.

Family fun was very much the theme for the event, and one of the highlights was the chance to ride in a tumbril pulled by a magnificent Suffolk Punch horse called Humbug.

"We call him Humbug because he's sweet – his mother is called Candy," said Patricia Marland, who was busy organising the tumbril rides together with husband Bill.

Ipswich mum Joy Allen said her two sons, five-year-old George and Joseph, aged two-and-a-half, had enjoyed their ride behind the horse. Joseph said: "I like the big tractors."

A bouncy castle and face-painting added to the fun for youngsters. Kimberley Bussey, aged five, sat very still as Debbie Massey decorated her face with a blue dolphin design.

Otley College Principal John Pearson said he was delighted to welcome the community to a weekend "blending careers advice with leisure activities and fun".

Patricia Battye demonstrated Kumihimo, the Japanese art of silk braiding. She was one of a number of members of the Otley Spinners and Weavers taking part in the event.

Visitors were able to get expert information on courses and career choices, and also take part in a number of taster sessions, covering everything from bricklaying to planning a room and using paint techniques.

The weekend included the Suffolk Horticultural and Produce Association's autumn show, and activities included food tastings and conservation displays.

Special buses were laid on for the event taking people from the Old Cattle Market bus station in Ipswich to the college.
