AN ANGRY Ipswich father hit his daughter's boyfriend and then damaged the victim's car after a family row.

Following the fracas unemployed Terence Grimwood refused to co-operate with police and an officer had to administer two sprays of CS gas before arresting the 44-year-old.

At a hearing at South East Suffolk Magistrates Court yesterday > Grimwood, of Lindbergh Road, pleaded guilty to charges of criminal damage, common assault and resisting a police officer.

Margaret Cutts, prosecuting, told the court that the dramatic events unfolded on September 24.

She said: "The background to this case is a dispute between the defendant and the daughter's boyfriend, Andrew Munson.

"Matters came to a head on September 24 when the boyfriend was driving home and he found the defendant was driving behind him."

Upon arriving at his girlfriend's house Mr Munson stopped his car and Grimwood pulled up just inches away. Mr Munson had to crawl through the passenger side to get out of the vehicle.

Ms Cutts continued: "The defendant got out of his car and approached the boyfriend on foot."

After a heated exchange of words Grimwood punched Mr Munson in the face.

Shortly afterwards Grimwood got back in his car and drove off, as he did so his car scraped paint off Mr Munson's vehicle.

Later that day a police officer > visited Grimwood at his Lindbergh Road home.

Ms Cutts told the court that he attempted to hit the officer and was only calmed and then arrested after a double dose of CS spray.

In an interview with police he admitted committing the offences.

Ian Duckworth, for Grimwood, said the dispute arose over a family issue involving his daughter and her children. He added that Grimwood had been under pressure due to problems at home.

He also said that Grimwood and Mr Munson had reconciled their differences.

Magistrates adjourned the case for the preparation of pre-sentence reports. Grimwood was released on bail to return to the same court on December 6.
