But today the Ipswich family of Kevin Davidson said they had been blessed by a Christmas miracle.
The 46-year-old lorry driver was unconscious in hospital for more than a week, but woke for the first time on Christmas Day - much to the delight of his distressed relatives.
Although still in a critical condition after suffering appalling injuries in the crash in Lincolnshire on December 17, his family are now hopeful he will eventually be able to enjoy a belated Christmas dinner with them.
