A LOWESTOFT father has been cleared of rape.

Alan Tillyard, 34, has been cleared of three charges of rape against a schoolgirl and three alternative charges of indecent assault.

At Ipswich Crown Court, Judge John Devaux directed the jury to return not guilty verdicts on all six charges.

Tillyard told police he was "shocked and horrified" by the allegation. Tillyard's solicitor, Chris Brian, said following the acquittal: "My view is that since June information has been available to the police and prosecution and had they taken action of it, could have brought the matter to a far swifter conclusion rather than Mr Tillyard having to wait for the court to acquit him.

"Since June, he has not been able to see his two children because of the bail conditions and he has had to live away from his property."
