A 26-YEAR-OLD man butted a man in the face causing a two inch cut to his mouth during a family disco at Woodbridge Town Football Club, it was alleged.

Paul Dickinson, of St Edmunds Close, Woodbridge, had been at the disco in April last year with his partner and their three-year-old son, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

During the evening Dickinson had become upset when his son was accidentally knocked in the face and Dickinson had to be taken outside by guests including a man called Stephen Fitzpatrick, said Hugh Vass prosecuting.

Mr Fitzpatrick had not been involved in the earlier incident and had only gone outside to see if his help was needed.

However, Dickinson had accused Mr Fitzpatrick of laughing at him and had butted him and kicked his legs, said Mr Vass.

Mr Fitzpatrick suffered a cut to his mouth and needed hospital treatment.

When a police officer arrived, Dickinson had threatened to kill Mr Fitzpatrick and had lunged at him with his fists clenched.

Dickinson has denied assaulting Mr Fitzpatrick causing him actual bodily harm and affray.

After his arrest Dickinson claimed he had been acting in self defence.

The trial continues.
