TRADERS at Woodbridge market could have got their way as a location has finally been pinpointed for a new site.

At a meeting of Suffolk Coastal last night the planning committee decided that the Hamblin Road site should be looked into above any of the other choices.

Market traders have been campaigning for more than a year to get the site moved from Market Hill because they said business was too quiet in the area.

Shoppers were given the stark warning that the market could be dying on its feet if it was not used.

Although the site outside the Shire Hall has been the traditional location for around 700 years, the main street is now considered to be the Thoroughfare.

Originally traders wanted to move to the Oak Lane car park to be as close as possible to the Thoroughfare and passing trade.

But this car park is extremely well used and committee members had concerns that the market could cause traffic chaos.

Other options were Station Road and Budges car park.

In the Station Road car park, the farmers' market and Womens' Institute market are held but traders feared the site was too far from the town.

Part of the Hamblin Road car park is now to be looked at as it is believed the number of spaces that will be taken up by the market will be minimal.

District Councillor Nigel Barratt said: "The site can take between 12 and 15 stalls and all the traders agree that would create a viable once a week market. Their vehicles will have to be parked elsewhere."

Comments were also made that the Hamblin Road site would be better as there would be more places to park unlike Market Hill which often got heavily congested with traffic on market days.

The committee agreed to support the principle of relocating the market and to pursue Hamblin Road as the most suitable location.

In the event that the site does not materialise an alternative one will be looked into.
