FEARS were voiced today that a motorist or pedestrian could be killed or seriously injured on a Felixstowe street unless action is taken to stop speeding.

Residents and councillors say Seaton Road in Walton is becoming increasingly dangerous and something needs to be done urgently to prevent a tragedy.

There have already been a number of accidents on the street – and more than 65 residents have signed a petition calling for safety measures.

Town councillor Dave Cawdron said the road was a family housing area and used by hundreds of children going to and from Orwell High School and neighbouring junior and infants schools.

"When you see the speed of some of the vehicles going up and down the road sometimes, it is unreal – they are going far too fast for this sort of road," he said.

"We really need something done about it before someone is killed or seriously injured along there.

"The residents are rightly concerned and it is a real worry with all the school students and mums with young children which use it and cross it.

"I think the experts need to monitor the road and look at what best can be done."

Mr Cawdron, who works at the Bounty Fisheries fish and chip shop at the junction of Seaton Road and High Road West, said the road's problems stemmed from a combination of speed and difficulties at its junction.

He had witnessed several accidents and on occasions chip shop owner Rob Wicks, a coastguard team member with first aid expertise, had had to help the victims of crashes near the business.

Mike Stokell, councillor and secretary of Felixstowe Safety Committee, said the watchdog group had had concerns for many years about speed in Seaton Road.

"I think if the police set up a speed trap there for a few days and kept an eye on what was happening the problem would disappear," he said.

"They may need to do it again at a later date but at least drivers would be aware that it was an area where they could be caught."

Felixstowe Town Council has agreed to ask the police to set up speed traps and also referred the issue to the Highways Advisory Committee – a joint town and county council group – to discuss possible safety measures.

Angela Rapley, Suffolk County Council traffic engineer, said: "We will be happy to receive this petition and speak to the residents of Seaton Road about their current concerns.

"There are currently no plans to implement any road schemes in this area. Recent investigations into the various transport issues in the town as part of the Local Transport Action Plan, have not identified any significant problems along this road."
