A TEENAGE driver told of her terror today as hooded yobs threw items at her car as it passed under a bridge near the port.

Isabelle Bennett, 19, lives in Old Felixstowe and was driving to the town’s Morrisons supermarket just after 1pm last Thursday.

She was signalled by a lorry driver as she drove along the A14 towards the footbridge near the superstore turn off.

She said: “This lorry was coming from the other direction and was flashing his lights at me and the driver was pointing up.

“I looked at the bridge and saw these two hooded youths, I think they must have been teenagers, throwing things on to the A14.

“They were targeting vehicles. I saw them look at me and throw something towards me.

“I swerved over the road and missed it, but it was very frightening.”

Miss Bennett reported the incident to the police, but felt it was vital other motorists should be aware that yobs were once again targeting drivers.

“It is frightening to think what could have happened. Sometimes I take my god-daughter in the car and she is only a few weeks old. It is terrifying that this is happening.

“I couldn’t see their faces because they had their hoods up, but I hope that they get caught by the police because they could cause a terrible accident.”

In December last year, 13 vehicles, including cars, lorries, and an ambulance, had stones and rocks thrown at them from the A14 flyover at Trimley St Mary. Two eight-year-old boys were said to be responsible for the incidents and spoken to by police.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Police said officers were sent to the scene and checked both the footbridge and the High Road road bridge – which carries the local traffic from Trimley to Felixstowe – from both directions, plus local footpaths, but found no sign of the youngsters.

She urged people seeing anyone throwing items off bridges or any suspicious activity on bridges to call police immediately on 999.

“Throwing items onto the road is a very dangerous activity – it would be dangerous if the traffic was moving slowly let alone on the A14, and could cause a very serious accident,” she said.

? Anyone with information about those involved in the incident last Thursday is asked to call officers on 101.
