FELIXSTOWE: When Clare Lasker was born, the world was a very different place.

Born 105 years ago, the remarkable woman has lived through two world wars, including being bombed three times during the Blitz in London, and the turbulent economic and social years which followed.

Mrs Lasker, whose noteworthy birthday is on Thursday, certainly doesn’t let her old age hold her back. She is still an active member in a number of clubs, enjoys regular walks along the seafront and goes shopping on her own.

She said: “I was a good walker.

“I can’t do it now so much because my legs complain and they’re a bit wibbly wobbly but I manage and I still like walking.”

Mrs Lasker was born in Lancashire in 1906 and moved to Bourne, in Lincolnshire, at a young age.

She then moved to London in her late teens and stayed there during the Second World War.

“I went to London and I got bombed out of three areas,” she said.

She moved to Suffolk in the 1950s with her husband Ted and lived in Ipswich and Trimley before moving to Felixstowe.

She is now living in a sheltered housing complex but is determined to keep her independence with regular walks and regular visits to St John’s Church.

Mrs Lasker’s community worker, Beverley Alderton, says she is a remarkable lady.

She said: “I have been working with her for 12 years and she’s not changed at all since then.

“She’s always been incredibly active and she has a marvellous social life and lots of friends.

“She has the most infectious laugh – she’s just an inspiration for how old age should be lived.”

With 105 now just around for the corner Mrs Lasker said she has no secret to living to such a ripe old age.

“I don’t have a secret,” she said.

“I just keep going.”

Her friends from the East Suffolk Association for the Blind celebrated her birthday at their monthly meeting at the Felixstowe Trades and Labour Club.
