FIGURES released by Suffolk police reveal there have been more than 250 crashes involving lorries on the A14 in the past five years where people have been killed or injured.

The statistics have been compiled following the pile-up near the Trimley interchange sliproad on the dual carriageway last month which claimed the life of a grandmother and her 15-year-old grandson.

Driver Christine Taylor, 59, of Clovelly Road, Wyken, died at the scene after her Fiat Punto was in collision with two 38-tonne trucks heading for Felixstowe.

Student and keen carp fisherman William Taylor, of Welsh Road, Coventry, suffered multiple injuries in the accident. He was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridgeshire, but later died.

A second passenger, a man in his 60s believed to be Philip Wall, suffered serious injuries.

His condition in Addenbrooke’s Hospital was yesterday described as “critical but improving”.

The figures for crashes on the A14 involving goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes shows there has been one a week on average since 2008, but the number has been decreasing.

In 2010 there were 71, last year 55 and in the first six months of this year just 18.

The latest came this week when two people were injured, one taken to hospital, after a lorry rolled over at Dock Gate Two at Felixstowe.

Community leaders in Trimley St Martin and Trimley St Mary have called for improvements to the A14 and would like to see the idea of an overtaking ban explored, improved separation of cars and lorries as trucks approach the dock spur junction, and better use of electronic overhead information signs to improve safety.

Police have issued a renewed appeal over the crash at Trimley on August 20.

A spokesman said: “Police have spoken to a number of people who were in the area at the time, but are aware that as this is a busy stretch of road there are likely to be a number of other people that haven’t as yet come forward.”

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call Pc Andy Smith on 101.

? A 49-year-old man from Dovercourt was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was released on police bail and is due to return on October 16.
