PEOPLE in Felixstowe have been struck by the curse of the sat nav – enduring lost lorries going past their doors and shaking homes.

The puzzling problem has been going on for months but no-one could work out why the 38-ton articulated trucks were going down residential Langer Road.

Each vehicle would reach the Ordnance roundabout before turning round and retracing its journey back towards the port.

The stream of vehicles was captured on a resident’s security CCTV and photos have now persuaded highways chiefs there is a problem and to take action.

It appears truckers’ sat navs are to blame, misreading postcodes and sending them the wrong way to the distribution centres on an industrial estate.

The map-machines have been telling drivers to turn left at the Beach Station Road traffic lights instead of right – giving them a mile-long detour.

One resident said: “I spoke to two drivers and one of them, an English driver, was given a postcode which was far too wide ranging and the other a foreign driver was just lost.

“I think a ban should be brought in to stop the vehicles using Langer Road.”

Some residents were concerned because the trucks were passing Langer Primary Academy, while others said the HGVs were causing homes to vibrate.

It is understood the lost trucks were trying to reach industrial estates and distribution centres in Carr Road and Walton Avenue.

Suffolk County Council’s highways department is now to improve signs on the Walton Avenue approach to Langer Road to ensure lorries turn right at the traffic lights.

A highways spokesman said: “This work will be ordered this week and should be completed on site late March.

“Hopefully this will ensure that all traffic unfamiliar with the area and looking for the industrial estate and business park destinations on Langer Road will find their way there by the most direct route.”
