AT the flick of a switch, Felixstowe's town centre was given a festive season makeover.

Thousands of coloured bulbs burst into life, including strings and garlands and the centrepiece of the tree on The Triangle, as mayor Joan Sennington had the honour of switching on the resort's Christmas lights.

Big crowds gathered in Hamilton Road for the traditional carol singing led by the Salvation Army Band and a group of children carrying candles paraded past the shops as the switch on ceremony took place.

Earlier in the afternoon, there had been a variety of seasonal entertainment, including the arrival of Santa in his grotto, Stagecoach Theatre Company, majorettes giving displays, Trimley St Martin Primary School's country dancers, and music from Cavendish Community Church.

The lights are organised by Felixstowe Lions with contributions from traders and Felixstowe Town Council, which pays the electricity bill.
