Felixstowe: Tea for two as girls do pair of badges at once

Each girl from the 1st Old Felixstowe Brownies was challenged to look after a guest – inviting someone from the community to join them for tea and then working out what they would serve for the occasion.

They then had to make the sandwiches and cakes, and drinks, welcome their guest and entertain them, attending to their every need.

The girls had to prepare the tables for the event at the Old Felixstowe Community Centre, Ferry Road, Old Felixstowe, and also made the table decorations.

After the meal they were tasked with doing all the clearing away and the washing up!

The aim of the event was to give the girls experience of looking after a guest and for them to gain their hostess badges.

During the evening, the girls took part in another badge – for their communications skills.

Each had to stand on stage and recite a poem, announcing themselves in the phonetic language, and “signing” it in sign language for deaf people, having learned both skills.

Most girls chose a humorous poem and all enjoyed a big round of applause from the guests.

Brown Owl Penny Parker said: “It was a lovely evening and all the Brownies did really well.

“They each had to write a letter to their guest to start off before they even started preparing food, thinking about conversations, and so on.

“They also spent several weeks learning the phonetic and sign language.

“So both badges tested a large variety of skills.”
