CANCER is a terrifying prospect for everyone, but a new roadshow aims to help people understand more about the killer disease – and how to avoid it.
The Clued-up on Cancer roadshow is heading for Felixstowe this weekend and is chance for people to go along and find out more in a fun way.
The roadshow – which will be outside the town's seafront leisure centre on Saturday from 10am to 4pm – is a joint project between Mid Anglia Cancer Network, Anglia Television and other organisations.
It is touring the region and will offer visitors street entertainment, fruit and vegetable juggling and a prize quiz as well as lots of straightforward information and advice about avoiding and detecting cancer.
Dr David Blainey, cancer lead with the Mid Anglia Cancer Network, said: "We know that cancer is a frightening prospect for many people and we are always keen to promote greater understanding and an awareness of how people can help us to help them.
"The Clued up on Cancer roadshow offers an informal way of spreading some vitally important health messages."
The roadshow has three main objectives; to challenge and reduce common misconceptions, to reinforce messages about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, to stress the importance of body awareness and the need to seek medical advice straightaway if unexplained changes happen.
NHS staff from East Suffolk will be at the roadshow, including Hilary Andrews, smoking cessation co-ordinator from Ipswich Hospital, Nerinda Evans, cancer lead for Suffolk PCTs, Alison Garnham, gynaecological cancer nurse specialist from Ipswich Hospital, and Julie Harper, a Felixstowe-based district nurse who is also a member of the Macmillan primary care cancer team.
As well as being able to talk to health care professionals, there will be information for visitors to take away and giveaways for children, such as balloons and badges.
