VOLUNTEERS are reviving an historic ferry crossing to link villages on the coast.

The ferry from Butley to Orford, near Woodbridge, has started operating again over the 100 yards of water at Butley Creek.

Walkers will have to book in advance for a crossing at weekends during the summer – and if there is enough support, the number of days when the ferry runs could be extended.

The ferry has a 600-year-old history and has mainly served ramblers and the residents of Boyton and Butley who want to use the right of way to Orford.

When Bryan Rogers, the last ferryman, retired the future of the service was thrown into doubt. But now the Alde and Ore Association has paid for a small boat, the licence, insurance and life-saving equipment.

The ferry is being run by Graham Hussey, Juliet Redding and other volunteers. It costs £1 per person for a crossing, weather permitting, and the boat will take dogs, but not bicycles.

Judith Hanlon, spokeswoman for Suffolk Coast and Heaths Project, said: "We think it is great when we see a community project leading an initiative like this and we will help and try to give as much support as we can."

Bookings for ferry crossing can be made on 01394 450843 and 411767.
