FIREFIGHTERS in Essex made an unusual rescue in Chelmsford today.

A crew from the town saved a distressed swan when the exhausted bird crash landed on the road in front of their engine in Rainsford Lane.

Sub Officer Rob Sherwin said: “One of the appliances and crews was out on some routine duties when they saw a swan flying very low coming towards the road.

“Then the bedraggled looking bird just belly flopped onto the road right in front of us.”

The crew stopped traffic and went out to help the bird using one of their fire tunics to wrap around it.

The swan was carried into the fire engine and taken back to the station where firefighters informed the RSPCA.

The crew looked after the stricken bird for around an hour before it was taken to a sanctuary in Maldon.
