MANAGEMENT at a superstore in Hadleigh today praised firefighters after they contained midnight blaze in the empty store.

Paul Lemmon, deputy security manager at Buyright on Calais Road, said that it was business as usual today at the store and thanked fire crews who he said had saved the business possibly thousands of pounds in damaged stock.

Fire crews from Hadleigh and Nayland were alerted to the blaze just after midnight by an automatic fire alarm. They reported smoke and flames billowing from an extractor fan at the back of the store.

Breaking into the deserted building they were able to contain the fire in a disabled toilet and vented the building to reduce smoke damage.

"The fire brigade saved us a lot of agro and we are very grateful," said Mr Lemmon. "They ventilated the building straight away so there is no smoke damage. We have only lost a disabled toilet."

The power supply to the store has been affected by last night's fire and some credit card transactions will have to be completed manually, he added. Although it is hoped full power will be restored by lunchtime today.
