Witnesses at the scene described seeing a plume of thick black smoke rising from the burning vehicles, which could be seen in surrounding villages.

The intense heat of the fire had welded the lorry and the car together, making it difficult for firefighters to separate the vehicles.

The colour of the car was also no longer distinguishable because flames had burnt right through to the metal. The vehicle was a charred empty shell.

The road was blocked for more than four hours as accident investigation teams assessed the wreckage and traffic was diverted on alternative routes.

Motorists heading from Diss and Bungay along the A143 were diverted through the village of Wortwell, causing long delays.
