AN IPSWICH man said lives were put at risk by an arson attack outside his home.

The fire was one of a string of blazes which kept county fire crews busy.

The 28-year-old, who did not want to be named, claimed it was the second time the top-floor flat in Peterhouse Close has been targeted.

He smelt smoke and when he went to investigate saw the rug ablaze outside his front door. He telephoned the emergency services after dousing the flames with a bucket of water.

"Whoever was responsible put my life in danger and that of my neighbours," he said. "It was not a sick joke it was deliberate. If I hadn't have smelt smoke the whole house could have gone up."

Two fire engines attended the blaze just before 7pm yesterday.

Earlier an Ipswich family had to leave their home after a blaze broke out in the kitchen. The fire started in the cooker of the end-terrace house in Bostock Road at 5.30pm.

Firefighters took 15 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Crews were also called yesterday to a fire in a block of flats in Felixstowe. It is believed to have started in the bed of a second-floor flat at Lanyards in Brownlow Road at about 3.20pm.

Smoke was seen in the hallway before two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus spent 20 minutes bringing the fire under control.
