FIREFIGHTERS were called a fierce blaze in a semi-detached house in Walton on the Naze tonight.

The occupant and his elderly mother were able to escape the blaze which started at 7.45pm at the house in South View Drive.

Ten firefighters wearing breathing apparatus put out the flames by 9pm.

They said the ground floor of the house was well alight and the house was heavily smoke-logged when they arrived.

Station Officer Lee Palfreyman said: “The resident heard a noise in his kitchen and discovered the fridge was on fire and thick black smoke was pouring out.

”The man called the Fire Service and got himself and his elderly mother out of the house and waited for us to arrive, which was exactly the right thing to do.
