Judges returned glowing verdicts on The Crown Inn at Ufford, near Woodbridge, when selecting it as Suffolk's Real Fire Pub of the Year.

Two traditional open fires have welcomed customers to the popular village pub and restaurant for the past nine years – one for the comfort of diners and another reserved for regulars in the bar.

The competition proved too hot for other pubs from across the county nominated for the award after members of the Approval Coal Merchants Scheme (ACMS) put forward their favourite log fires.

Mike Colling, the pub's landlord, and his wife, Pauline, will now receive a cheque for £250 and a tonne of free coal on behalf of the Coal Merchants Federation.

But the warm-hearted couple has chosen to share their celebrations with customers by offering free house wine, while stocks last, during the Monday to Friday lunchtime and evening opening periods from Monday, February 18.

The competition was organised by the Solid Fuel Association and Coal Merchants' Federation and The Crown was nominated for the top award by family-run fuel business E.R. & R.T. Rackham, of Wickham Market.

Mr and Mrs Colling will receive their prize from coal merchants, David and Jane Rackham, tomorrow at 1.30pm.

Jane Heginbotham, general manager of the Solid Fuel Association, said: "Landlords are well aware that a real fire on a cold winter's day is a highly popular focal point in their pubs. More and more pubs and hotels are realising that the warmth from a real fire always adds that extra cosiness and atmosphere."
