A COUPLE today gave their backing to restrictions of fireworks after their cherished dog, Lady, disappeared during the festivities surrounding November 5.

It was a double blow for Peter and Valerie Hitching as they were given the pooch as a 37th anniversary present from their children three years ago.

But Lady – a Yorkshire terrier and Chihuahua cross –bolted in fear two weeks ago after fireworks went off near her home and hasn't been seen since.

Posters have been put up all over the area, but despite a plea to find her she still hasn't returned home.

A tearful Valerie, 58, of Lovetofts Drive, Ipswich, said: "My grand-daughter was staying over. A couple of friends came to call for her and there were a lot of fireworks going off at the time. Lady just went out.

"She is not used to going out at all and it was pouring with rain at the time. I just don't know where she will be.

"She's never run away before. My grandson Billy who is autistic keeps asking when she is coming home.

"It's just the not knowing, that's what hurts. It is heartbreaking. I've still got her basket and toys here.

Lady looks more like a Chihuahua than a terrier.

She is a reddish brown colour with a white bib, pointed ears and has a tail that comes out like a fan.

"She is a lovely dog," said Valerie, who has had her since a puppy. "If anyone came to the door she wouldn't bark or anything and she got to know people's voices."

She appealed for fireworks to be restricted for November 5 and said: "There were a load of fireworks going off this Saturday too.

"It is not just because I'm getting old but it is just getting ridiculous. Now we have the fireworks going off a month before and a month after.

"Lady would hide under our legs during fireworks and shake and pant. It was the fireworks that scared her off."

Her daughter Tracy, 39, agreed: "Year after year we keep our pets inside a few days before and a few days after November 5.

"Now it seems to be the fireworks are still going off two weeks before and two weeks after. Please think of the pets and their owners as the dog is still missing."
