IPSWICH-based GBRailfreight has signed its first contract to haul container trains from Felixstowe to other destinations in Britain.

The company has a five-year contract with Medite Shipping of Ipswich to haul container traffic from the Port of Felixstowe to Selby in North Yorkshire.

The service started this week with a daily train hauling up to 20 wagons per service.

The inland freight terminal at Selby is owned and operated by the Potter Group. A dedicated warehouse distribution service will be offered at Selby to ensure customers receive a seamless service.

This exciting new development for GBRailfreight will bring rail freight competition to the Port of Felixstowe, where previously only Freightliner has operated, and as the traffic is new to rail, significant numbers of lorries will be removed from the A14 / A1 corridor.

GBRailfreight – a sister company to Anglia Railways – started operations in March 2001.

The company has an existing 8-year contract with Railtrack to convey infrastructure materials to engineering sites in East Anglia and the East Midlands.
