FIVE people were taken to hospital today following a crash on the A12.
The collision, between a blue Volkswagen Golf and a white van, happened on the northbound carriageway at Benhall, close to the junction with the B1121.
Five people were taken to Ipswich Hospital. Two were initially thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries, but police later said their condition had improved.
Suffolk police has closed the road and motorists are urged to avoid the area.
A spokeswoman said: “The incident is causing considerable tailbacks and people are advised to avoid the area if possible.”
The road was re-opened just before 3pm.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact Pc Paul Carr on 01473 613500.
