Officers said the victim was Adrian Miller, 54, and his family have been informed.
A post mortem will take place today and then an inquest will be opened and adjourned to allow his family to hold a funeral.
Three fire crews were called to Mr Miller's top floor flat - above the Citizens' Advice Bureau at the corner of Ranelagh Road and Orwell Road - on Monday lunchtime.
Firefighters had been alerted after neighbours heard a smoke alarm, and firefighters had to break in to the building.
They found Mr Miller's body in the flat.
