ONE of Ipswich's most hardened eyesores could make way for a missing link in the redevelopment of 'Ipswich village'.

The neglected area of land between St Francis Tower on Franciscan Way and Cardinal Street near the UGC cinema has become an overgrown, unofficial refuse tip.

But this could soon change with the unveiling of a bid to build a five-storey block of flats, according to plans lodged

with Ipswich council this week.

The planning application asks for permission to build 45 two bedroom flats in a five storey block with car parking and landscaping. The plans have been welcomed by Phil Smart, the council spokesman for planning and economic development.

He said: "We have been generally pleased with the amount of investment coming into Ipswich – particularly if it uses brownfield land on town centre sites."

He said extending the identity of 'Ipswich village' site towards the waterfront was of particular interest. This plan would link Cardinal Park with the wet dock.

The unveiling of the drafts can provide a gateway to the town centre with the redevelopment of the former dock area.
