But now the former Ipswich MP has turned on his government's health policies - his anger sparked by the refusal of the government to allow Alzheimer's Disease sufferers to get the drugs they need.
He spoke exclusively to the Evening Star about his wife's struggle with the disease - and about how he feels his government has let down thousands of sufferers when they need help most.
