Former Town star's brush with the law

FORMER Ipswich Town star Kieron Dyer is embroiled in controversy yet again today after a teammate allegedly attacked a woman in Newcastle.

Freddie Shepherd, chairman of Newcastle United, has promised a full investigation into the incident which saw Welsh international Craig Bellamy cautioned by police after the early morning fracas.

The ex-Norwich City player is alleged to have assaulted a 21-year-old Newcastle student as he attempted to remove her from Mr Dyer's Mercedes S500.

"Craig Bellamy has been cautioned for the offence and that is the end of the matter," said a spokesman for Northumbria police today. "Nobody else has been cautioned or charged."

However Mr Dyer now faces being questioned as part of an internal investigation by the club.

"Newcastle United has a strict code of conduct which we expect our players to adhere to," said Mr Shepherd.

"We are aware of the alleged allegations, which have been made against certain of our players and shall be conducting our own internal investigation immediately."

The trouble is believed to have started after Bellamy and Dyer joined striker Carl Cort and full-back Wayne Quinn for a night out.

The assault came as the stars chatted to some girls close to Dyer's £50,000 car.

It is understood the girls tried to hitch a lift in the car but the joke backfired and one of the girls was hurt as Bellamy attempted to remove her from the car.

A complaint was made to the police and the four men were questioned at Newcastle Central police station.

It is understood that Dyer, who Newcastle signed from Ipswich for £6 million, was the chauffeur for his team mates and had not been drinking.

The incident is just the latest in a long line that have seen Mr Dyer, who is currently injured with a stress fracture of the foot, making the headlines for the wrong reasons.
