TWO areas of Newmarket have been cordoned off today following an incident where a woman and a man were assaulted.

Four men have been arrested in connection with the complaint made by an 18-year-old woman and a male friend.

The woman is said to have sustained injuries after being “manhandled” in the early hours following an altercation on Newmarket High Street.

Officers were called to The Avenue at just after 5am to reports of the alleged incident and the two areas have been cordoned off for forensic examination.

A spokesman for Suffolk police said the exact extent of the woman's injuries is not known at this stage, though they are not serious.

Three men - two 31-year-olds and a 37-year-old - are currently in custody at Lowestoft Police Station, while the fourth - a 26-year-old man - is currently in custody at Sudbury Police Station.

Officers are appealing for witnesses and would like to speak to anyone who was in the area between around 4.30am and 5.30am this morning.
