Four people – two adults and two children – were taken to hospital after being rescued from a home in Felixstowe during the early hours of this morning.
Fire crews were called to the blaze above the Bergerac Wine Bar in Granville Road, off Sea Road, shortly before 3.30am.
The four were all rescued from the first floor flat and were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. They are not thought to have suffered any serious injuries.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service group commander Ken Williamson said after the family put in the initial call, fire control stayed on the phone and talked to them until the crews arrived and brought them to safety.
He said: “As soon as control received the call, they mobilised the necessary resources and remained on the line to give as much safety advice as possible until the fire crews arrived, and right up until they got them out of the building.
“As a result, they were also able to contact the fire crews and pass on vital information that saved valuable minutes.”
The fire crews – from Felixstowe and Ipswich East fire station – spent about 50 minutes at the scene of the blaze before returning to their bases.” The cause of the fire will be investigated – but there were no suspicious circumstances.
