In 1982 the great comedy great Frankie Howerd was in town to film scenes for a television show that would not feature on TV for another 10 years.
Best known for his roles in Up Pompeii and appearing in Carry On films, Howerd had come to Ipswich to film for the television show, Then Churchill Said to Me, which was due to hit television screens later that year.
The show was set during World War 2, being set in Winston Churchill’s secret underground wartime bunker, with Howerd playing the role of Private Potts.
The show was shelved after filming was complete due to the outbreak of the Falklands War and due to this was deemed unsuitable for transmission due to that sensitive time.
Then Churchill Said to Me did eventually make it on to the screens however in 1993 on UK Gold, a year after Howerd had passed away, and would come to me Howerd’s last comedy work of his great career.
