A COUPLE of old school friends from Ipswich have been reunited on the other side of the world – thanks to a football internet site.

Former St Margaret's school pupil Gareth Jones lost contact with his old classmate Ben Southgate, seven years ago, after moving to a different school.

Chances of a reunion between the two seemed slim when Gareth moved to New South Wales, Australia, with his family.

Amazingly, and unbeknown to Gareth, Ben also moved around the globe to Australia and thanks to their common interest in Ipswich Town the two have been able to meet up Down Under.

Gareth's mum, Marion Jones, takes up the story: "A few weeks ago Gareth was reading the Ipswich Town FC website and saw various messages sent by supporters.

"He noticed there was one from a Ben Southgate in New South Wales, He decided to make contact on the web to find out if it was Ben Southgate from St Margaret's School – and it was.

"Unknown to each other both had emigrated to Australia and were now living just over one hour's travel apart."

Shortly after their internet reunion the two lads met in person again when Ben visited Gareth at his Emu Plains home.

The two friends now stay in touch regularly and the topic of conversation often focuses on a football club in the heart of Suffolk more than 9,000 miles away.

Mrs Jones added: "They keep in touch on the phone and talk about the latest soccer result. We do get to see some Ipswich matches, including the Leeds game recently.

"Also every Monday is a weekly round-up of all the Premiership League games."

Gareth is also keen to follow the progress of the youth side, as he was a former teammate of rising Town star Matt Bloomfield when they both played for Trimley Red Devils.
