A GROUP of university friends were set upon as they left an Ipswich nightclub by a group of men brandishing weapons including a metal bar and an empty champagne bottle, a court has been told.

A GROUP of university friends were set upon as they left an Ipswich nightclub by a group of men brandishing weapons including a metal bar and an empty champagne bottle, a court has been told.

One of the injured men, Yasir Mirghani suffered serious injuries after allegedly being hit with a silver bar by 22 year-old Glodean O'Connor, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

The incident happened in the early hours of September 17 last year as Mr Mirghani left Sound Academy, in Arcade Street, Ipswich, with a group of university friends, said Peter Fenn prosecuting.

O'Connor of Norwich Road, Ipswich, has denied wounding Mr Mirghani with intent to do him grievous bodily harm. He and another defendant, Mohammed Abubakar, 20, of Palmcroft Road, have also denied an offence of violent disorder on the same evening.

Mr Fenn told the court during the opening of the case yesterday that Mr Mirghani had been away to university and had been living in Ipswich for several months before the alleged attack in September.

On the night in question he had been at Sound Academy with some university friends who had travelled to Ipswich from Southampton and Harlow and during the evening they had allegedly seen O'Connor looking at them.

When the group left the club in the early hours of the morning, they were set upon by between four and six men allegedly including the two defendants.

After their arrest both defendants denied being part of the group that attacked Mr Mirghani and his friends.

The trial continues today.
