In February it was announced that the Bupa care home, Anglesea Heights, Ipswich, was to close.

The care home opened in 1991 after extensive alteration to the former hospital site, which had been there for over 150 years.

Anglesea Road Hospital opened in August 1836 with 50 beds, after £2,500 was raised by the public.

A third storey was added to the building in 1869 and a children’s wing was built in 1875 as a memorial to John Cobbold, the MP for Ipswich.

Over the years the Anglesea Road Hospital expanded covering much of the site between Henley Road and Warrington Road.

The site was a problem with difficult access for accident emergency arrivals in Ivry Street and very limited parking for staff, outpatients and visitors.

Over several years wards and services were moved from ‘Ipswich Hospital, Anglesea Road Wing’ to the Heath Road Hospital.

By 1988 all services had moved to Heath Road and most of the Anglesea Road site was demolished, but the original building, with its four columns around the front door, was retained. New buildings were constructed around the original Victorian site.

Do you have memories of the site when it was a hospital?
