HUNDREDS of people enjoyed the second annual funday in Greenwich, on a site that may soon see a permanent building to host similar events on a more regular basis.

The Greenwich Community Group are set to appeal to the Community Improvement Steering Group of Ipswich Borough Council for cash for a building which would be the focal point of community events in the area.

They will have the backing of Deputy Mayor of Ipswich and Gainsborough ward councillor Don Edwards, who appeared at the funday on Saturday to show his support.

The area on Hawke Road – currently made available for recreational use – saw a barbecue, the Ipswich Community Playbus, the Princes Trust, the Fire Brigade, the Police and the Triangle Motorcycle Group show up. There was also face painting, ponies and a bouncy castle to entertain children.

Organiser Sharon Wickiewicz, chairman of the Greenwich Community Group said: "This area is supposedly a trouble area, but we have shown today and will continue to show that if we bring people together and make the effort then everybody can have a good time. It's been a great success.

"We are going to Ipswich Borough Council with our plan and we are hopeful. Greenwich needs such a facility and it would make such a difference."

Mr Edwards said: "I have served as councillor on this ward for 22 years and the area is brilliant. I am fed-up with some people thinking that this isn't a nice area. I am fully behind the plan. I will not accept people knocking Greenwich and I think today has shown what a nice place it is to live.

"It has been a success and I would like to thank the people that have taken the time to organise it and to contribute towards it."
