A west Suffolk park has a new commemorative sundial as the county continues to mark 100 years since the start of the First World War.
The sundial was installed in East Town Park, Haverhill this afternoon, in front of leading civic and military figures from across the region.
The £4,000 project is located prominently in the town’s former butterfly garden, in front of a flint wall between the car park and visitor centre.
The garden is also set for a revamp with a range of flowers, including a ribbon of red ornamental poppies.
Sarah Stamp, St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure, culture and heritage, said: “The conflict in the news is a daily reminder of what service to one’s country means.
“I am convinced that remembrance of the sacrifice made in both world wars sustains the peace we now enjoy. I am pleased that we continue to keep that commemoration relevant and alive in the heart of our communities.”
Many of the guests had attended this morning’s commemoration service in Bury St Edmunds.
St Mary’s Church in Haverhill will host the town’s own commemorative service on Sunday, starting at 3pm.
