THEIR moves might be a bit too energetic for most of us, but the Old Skool Hip-Hop Starz have got plenty of them to show off.

THEIR moves might be a bit too energetic for most of us, but the Old Skool Hip-Hop Starz have got plenty of them to show off.

The dancers recently bagged a gold award at the National Street Dance Championships (NSDC), in Peterborough, for their lively routines and there's a chance they could be chosen to perform on national TV as well.

The Starz, who come from all over Ipswich and meet every week under the guidance of dance director Wendy Dow, beat off 28,000 other competitors to reach the next stage of this year's Britain's Got Talent competition.

They're off to Earl's Court this weekend to try and impress the judges and make it to the final rounds, which will be shown on ITV, but first they wanted to impress us with some breaks.

Ms Dow explained how the group came together and managed to achieve their success. She said: “They're a really good group and are doing really well.

“I teach in schools all around the area and have experience with everyone here. They all auditioned to join and I chose 20 of them from 100.

“We try and give them something productive to do because kids tend to get a bad press but they work very hard to do well and go on to competitions.

“They're absolutely buzzing at the moment and can't wait to get to London.”

Ms Dow started Hip Hop dance academy Dance Skillz in 2005 and has attracted youngsters with a flair and enthusiasm for contemporary dance ever since.

She is still looking for keen dancers to join the group, especially boys between 13 and 16. If you've got some moves you're desperate for everyone to see, get along to Fitness First, in Russell Road, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on Mondays or 7pm to 8pm on Friday's or call 07515 645740.

Hip Hop

Hip hop music is a music genre typically consisting of a rhythmic vocal style called rap which is accompanied by backing beats.

It began to emerge in the early 1970s in New York City and had its roots in black pride.

It has been traced back to spoken-word poetry but many go further back to ancient African societies who used oral history to preserve their culture.

During the mid 1980s hip hop entered the mainstream as white musicians began to adopt the new style.
