Over the last few weeks members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra have been visiting Ipswich schools and music centres to work with local young people, prior to a concert in the town tonight.
Recent visits to four schools, including Oaks Community Primary, provided opportunities for more than 1,000 pupils to hear performances by orchestra members, directed by composer and workshop leader Hannah Conway.
The sessions focused on Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, which the pupils had been studying in preparation, and included the opportunity for a smaller group of students to create their own Mussorgsky-inspired compositions.
Pupils have been offered highly-subsidised tickets to the concert at the Regent Theatre as a part of the project. Kim Jenkins, senior manager of Suffolk County Music Service, said: “It has been a privilege to work with such enthusiastic pupils and in collaboration with such committed and talented musicians and educators.”
