FOUR people are being hunted after a man was attacked with a traffic barrier in an unprovoked attack today.

The 22-year-old victim, who was repeatedly round the head and back, was walking along Portman Road in Ipswich between 1am and 1.45am today when he was approached by the group.

One of the four mumbled something to the man. When he asked what had been said he was punched in the face and then hit around the head and back several times with the plastic barrier.

The man, who is from Ipswich, started to make his way home but realising he needed hospital treatment flagged down a passing car and asked the driver to call for an ambulance.

The victim was taken to Ipswich Hospital where he received treatment for cuts to his head, face and body and bruising.

Investigating officer Pc Andrew Wright said: "This appears to be a totally unprovoked attack on an innocent victim.

"We're appealing for any witnesses who may have seen this assault to come forward."

One of the group is described as a white male, aged 18 to 20, of average build and wearing a light coloured T-shirt.

He was with a white male and two white females, one of who had short dark brown bobbed hair. These three were also aged between 18 to 20 years old.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the incident or who may recognise the offenders from the descriptions is asked to call Pc Andrew Wright at Ipswich police on 01473 613500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
