Get ready for reunion of cup heroes

IPSWICH Town fans were today offered the chance to be a part of a wonderful day of celebration to mark the 30th anniversary of the Blues' FA Cup triumph.

It was on May 6, 1978 that Sir Bobby Robson's unfancied team overcame favourites Arsenal at Wembley Stadium to claim one of the world's most famous trophies.

To mark the stunning victory, The Evening Star and BBC Radio Suffolk have teamed up to stage Thirty Years of Honour - a day dedicated to Town's remarkable achievement.

The heroes of '78 - including legendary former boss and current club president Sir Bobby - will, on May 5, descend on Ipswich for what could be the last time the team is all together again.

And the Star is offering Blues fans the opportunity to enjoy the special anniversary festivities with their cup idols.

Supporters can register their interest in buying a table at a special gala dinner at the town hall, which will be followed by a chance to relive the magical day when match highlights are screened.

The dinner will follow an open top bus tour through Ipswich, finishing on the Cornhill where hundreds of fans are expected to gather to honour their heroes.

It is hoped the original cup final programme will be reproduced especially for the occasion.

Meanwhile, talks are on going to bring the famous FA Cup back to Suffolk.

Ipswich start their cup campaign at Portman Road tomorrow when they entertain Premier League Portsmouth in the third round.

Ipswich Town chairman David Sheepshanks said he was firmly behind the anniversary celebration.

“I think it's the most marvellous gesture and we as a club will do everything we can to support it,” he said.
