ANCIENT philosophy cites scores of reasons why watching fish is good for your health.

Now here is a company that will not only provide this sea of tranquility in your place of work but will look after the well being of the aquarium's creatures too.

And in coming up with Rent-A-Fin as a business name, Nigel Cossey and his business partner, David Wood have left nothing to chance about what it is they do.

There are firms that hire out paintings and photographs to hang on office walls. Florists too offer services whereby arrangements are displayed and nurtured. So why not provide a customised tank with contents to mesmerise, de-stress and interest?

Ipswich-born Nigel, 31, has had a long interest in fish of all types but being brought up in a large family all thoughts of having an aquarium of his own were washed into wishful thinking.

"My uncle suggested that providing fish in aquariums for other people and offering a maintenance service would be a good substitute and with Dave, who I have been friends with since we were 12, we set up Rent-A-Fin," said the former Thurleston High School pupil.

Until recently it has been a hobby-cum-part-time occupation for Nigel who is soon to be made redundant from his design engineering job at Celestion.

"This is now a golden opportunity for me to really make a go of my love of fish by making it in to a proper career where I can give 24-hours service round the clock.

"We already have some good clients, such as ntl's offices in Crown House, SEH Windows at Whitehouse Industrial Estate and Gym and Trim – our first ever customer – still going strong.

"There are many more companies and sports centres with our tanks and this has been really through word-of-mouth marketing and I have lots more prospective clients to see."

Moneyworks caught up with him during one of his maintenance visits at one of his newer clients, ASD at Sir Thomas Slade Court in Star Lane, Ipswich.

Mike Murray, logistics manager at the sports garment company that manufacturers bench clothes (track suits, etc worn by sports people such as the England football squad), said watching tropical fish in an aquarium is the most de-stressing activity.

Nigel will customise the aquarium to suit the customer's needs and that is especially true if available space is at a premium.

And the contents. Everything from the big, bold and brassy-looking goldfish to dainty thread-like and colourful African tropicals is available.

With the economy being a bit tenuous at the moment it could upset some company budgeting to add £60 a month for the service – even though the package includes automatic feeding and lighting devices, fortnightly visits, full maintenance and liability insurance?

"Only momentarily," said Nigel.

With such ancient philosophies as that which teaches Feng Shui (where eight gold and one black fish are good for relaxing and bringing good feelings) he easily argues his case.

"The recent stress awareness week showed the workplace is a stressful environment. An aquarium of fish is a good antidote," he added.
