"I heard the news yesterday and I was very shocked and saddened to hear it," he said.

"Everyone in Ipswich Labour Party will want to wish him well and hope that Jamie makes a full recovery as soon as possible.

"I know Jamie is very seriously ill – but he's a real fighter and if anyone can get through this, he can."

Current council leader Peter Gardiner said everyone at the borough would be hoping Mr Cann would make a full and speedy recovery.

"This town owes a great deal to him and everyone will be hoping that he pulls through as soon as possible."

His political opponents were also keen to wish him well. Former Tory group leader Russell Harsant was sorry to hear the news of his illness.

"I wish him well. He was a formidable opponent in the council chamber. He hasn't been well for some time and I hope he makes a full recovery," he said.

"We had a very good campaign and I enjoyed our political debates. He is a good, honest politician and I hope he is soon better," he said.

At Handford Hall, where Mr Cann was deputy head before becoming MP, many members of staff still remember him fondly.

"It's very sad news, everyone connected with the school will be wishing him a full and speedy recovery," said headteacher Shelagh Cohen.

Mr Cann's son, Andrew, said the get well messages would be appreciated by the MP when they spoke to him in hospital.
