ELECTRIC blankets are potential killers and are the target of a special testing campaign coming to Ipswich.

Suffolk County Council's Trading Standards and the fire service are joining forces with Ipswich Borough Council to run the tests at Ipswich Corn Exchange on September 30 and October 1, from 9.30am until 4.30pm.

Peter Monk, of Suffolk County Council, said: "Leaving your blanket unchecked is just not worth the risk.

"We know from experience that there are still many in people's homes and they are responsible for 20 deaths every year in Britain."

Any blankets that fail the test will be marked unsafe. Facilities to dispose of them will be on offer, with vouchers for a new blanket offered to the owners.

To be tested, the blankets must be more than three years old, in a dry condition, complete with a switch or controller and be clearly marked with owner's name, address and phone number.

It is advisable to book your appointment early. The booking line, open from Monday, is 01473 584358.
