A man on Tuesday reported to Suffolk police hearing teenage screams while he was latenight jogging on Warren Hill two days before - the night the pair of 10-year-olds went missing in their home village of Soham, Cambridgeshire.
He returned to the well-known gallop during daylight hours to discover two areas of disturbed earth, said detectives directing the enquiry.
Suffolk police passed on the information to their colleagues in Cambridgeshire, who are now on the scene.
Forensic investigators are among 1,000 officers led by Det Supt Andy Hegg are already in position tonight.
