A 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL was left naked and unconscious in an isolated field after a middle-aged Suffolk man had sex with her a court heard.

Scott Barlow pleaded guilty to having sexual activity with a child and was said to be having a “mid-life crisis” and difficulties within his marriage when he met up with the girl, armed with vodka and condoms.

Ipswich Crown court heard that the father of four children aged nine, 13, 16 and 18 had met the girl two weeks earlier and she said he attempted to kiss her.

Godfried Duah, prosecuting, said that on August 1 last year the teenager who was dressed provocatively and had condoms in her bag met up with 44-year-old Barlow. Mr Duah said: “The aggravating features are that he plied her with drink and he abandoned the victim in that remote location”.

The court heard that Barlow encouraged her to drink vodka and threatened her not to tell anyone what had happened. He had sexual intercourse with her three times then left her unconscious and naked late at night.

Mr Duah said Barlow of Tayfen Road, Bury St Edmunds returned to the field the next morning to walk his dog. He said: “He realised a police investigation was going on there. He panicked that possibly the victim may have died. He did not say anything to the police until after he was arrested.”

Barlow made “full and frank” admissions to the police despite a lack of forensic evidence and pleaded guilty to having sexual activity with a child.

Christopher Morgan, mitigating, said: “This was not rape because the conduct of this girl has a part to play, although this does not condone his conduct. This is a man who shows genuine regret and remorse for his behaviour. He was having a mid-life crisis and there were tensions within his marriage.”

Judge Peter Thompson said: “She was so drunk she did not really know what she was doing. The most unpleasant feature is that you left her naked and unconscious in a field late in the night. She was in a state of terrible distress when she was found.”

Barlow was jailed for two and a half years and told not to have unsupervised contact with under 16-year-old's apart from with his own children.
